Casa Ikal Sian Kaan (2023)
Quintana Roo, Mexico
300m2
Located in Boca Paila, within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve in Quintana Roo, Casa Ikal blends contemporary design with sustainability in a protected natural environment. This family retreat responds to the region’s unique ecosystem with a structure elevated on concrete stilts, preserving native vegetation and allowing wildlife to pass through—minimizing environmental impact.
The orientation of the house takes full advantage of views toward the Caribbean Sea and the lagoon, while patios, terraces, and gardens featuring native flora reinforce its connection to the landscape. The design addresses the tropical climate through bioclimatic strategies such as cross ventilation, natural shading, and retractable terraces that offer hurricane protection.
The program includes four private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, social areas seamlessly integrated with the surroundings, and outdoor spaces such as pools and terraces that enrich everyday life.
Water collection and treatment systems, along with solar panels and wind turbines, ensure the project’s self-sufficiency. The choice of materials—such as chukum and certified Machiche wood—balances durability, functionality, and a deep respect for local identity.
Casa Ikal is an example of how architecture can coexist with its environment—integrating respectfully into the landscape while promoting sustainability. More than a residence, it is a space that celebrates the relationship between humans and nature, preserving its richness for future generations.
