Galería de Arte Mexicano (GAM) (2019)
Mexico City, Mexico
3000m2
Located in San Miguel Chapultepec, the Galería de Arte Mexicano (GAM) is a historic and cultural landmark in Mexico's art scene. Founded in 1935, this institution has promoted great masters such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Between 2018 and 2019, the building underwent an architectural intervention that balanced the preservation of its heritage value with the incorporation of modern elements to meet the current needs of art.
The project addressed key challenges, such as the general patching of the building and the replacement of worn-out floors. Additionally, lighting was optimized by combining diffused natural light with artificial systems, enhancing the visitor experience. The intervention also replaced the old vitroblock roof with a bioclimatic solution that promotes passive ventilation and reduces accumulated heat, creating a comfortable and sustainable environment.
The internal layout organizes functional spaces, such as exhibition areas, collections conservation, and research zones, designed for artists, researchers, and the general public. A material palette was used that respects the historic essence of the building, blending tradition and modernity. The project stands out for its sustainable approach, implementing ventilation and lighting strategies that reduce energy consumption.
This renovation ensures that the GAM continues to serve as a cultural meeting point, blending historical legacy and modernity in a space designed for art and the community.
