Located in Malpaís, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Mangos Residences is a residential project conceived to integrate with its coastal and tropical surroundings. The design addresses the challenges of the local climate, characterized by high temperatures, humidity, and intense rainfall, through solutions that prioritize sustainability, comfort, and respect for nature. The design takes advantage of the site’s topography and is elevated on concrete footings, evoking the structure of stilt houses. This strategy reduces environmental impact, allows water flow, protects local wildlife, and prevents moisture from affecting the construction materials, such as laminated wood used for columns, beams, and roofs. The central idea of the project is to create homes that connect with the natural environment. Key design features include sloping roofs with wide overhangs, large windows, and terraces that integrate the interior with the landscape, while preserving elements such as the mango trees. The architectural program includes two housing prototypes with spaces designed to foster interaction and comfort, maintaining a balance between public and private areas. Mangos Residences incorporates sustainable strategies such as cross ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater reuse. These solutions, along with the use of eco-friendly materials, reflect the project’s environmental commitment, improving the quality of life for its residents while respecting the surrounding environment. This development establishes a model for sustainable housing, offering a balance between contemporary design and natural harmony.
